Vardan Ovsepian

Vardan Ovsepian is an Armenian-born pianist/composer whose studies include Yerevan State Conservatory, Estonian Music Academy, Helsinki Jazz Conservatory, and the Berklee College of Music. Mr. Ovsepian has long been fascinated by the blend of western classical music with jazz, and has been in perpetual search for unique ways of incorporating this hybrid formation in his composing and improvising. Major projects include a semi-large chamber ensemble (VOCE) focusing on a cinematic approach to musical narrative, the internationally-acclaimed “Fractal Limit” duet with Tatiana Parra, and two books, Mirror Exercises (2011) and Permutation Studies (2020), which reflect his remarkable angular geometric world, connected to his background in chess and his attraction to minimalism and contemporary architecture. Mr. Ovsepian has collaborated with artists including Mick Goodrick, Peter Erskine, Jerry Bergonzi, Ben Monder, and David Binney, has released over 20 albums as a leader and co-leader, and is currently a part-time jazz faculty member at Calarts.
