Course Enrollment Forms

DIRECTIONS:

Students seeking authorization for these courses must submit the required form via one of the below links. An overview of the process is as follows:

  1. Input your name and UCI email address.
  2. Input your instructor's name and UCI email address.
  3. Follow the prompts to complete and submit the form.
  4. The form will route first to your instructor for approval and confirmation of units, then it will route to the undergraduate or graduate director, as appropriate, for their approval.
  5. A copy of the fully approved form will be automatically routed to the Music Office.
  6. The Music Office will email your 5-digit course code to enroll.
  7. Enroll by the Add/Drop deadline.

The Add/Drop deadline is Friday of Week 2. Please submit your form as early as possible, preferably by Wednesday of Week 2 if possible, to ensure there's enough time to process the authorization and for you to enroll. After Week 2, students must submit their form(s) as noted above AND submit an enrollment exception request online via Student Access.

Music 191: Tutorial in Music

Undergraduate Course

  • Independent supplemental instruction related to student’s area of study
  • May be repeated for credit unlimited times
  • 1-4 units
  • Undergraduate Music majors and non-majors

 

Music 199: Independent Study

Undergraduate Course

  • Research, writing or composition work, under the guidance of a faculty member
  • May be taken for credit 3 times
  • 2 units OR 4 units
  • Additional requirements apply if requesting 4 units (noted on form)
  • Undergraduate Music majors only

 

Music 240: Graduate Projects

Graduate Course

  • Substantial projects in performance, conducting or composition (other than those specifically required for the degree), accompanied by a summary paper
  • May be repeated for credit unlimited times, as topics vary
  • 4 units
  • Music graduate students only

 

Music 243A: Second-Year Research and Writing Tutorial I

Graduate Course

  • First of a 2 quarter sequence
  • Students gain experience in an area of research concentration by undertaking directed reading on a topic of their choice and then writing a paper of near-publishable length and quality on that topic
  • May be taken once for credit
  • 4 units
  • Music graduate students only

 

Music 243B: Second-Year Research and Writing Tutorial II

Graduate Course

  • Second of a 2 quarter sequence
  • Students gain experience in an area of research concentration by undertaking directed reading on a topic of their choice and then writing a paper of near-publishable length and quality on that topic
  • May be taken once for credit
  • 4 units
  • Music graduate students only

 

Music 250: Directed Research

Graduate Course

  • Individual research projects, in preparation for qualifying exams or resulting in the writing of a substantial paper pertaining to the principal area of concentration
  • May be repeated for credit unlimited times, as topics vary
  • 4 units
  • Music graduate students only

 

Music 290: Dissertation Research

Graduate Course

This course does not require authorization. Please have your instructor contact department staff to have a course created and indicate the number of units.

  • Research and writing of a PhD dissertation
  • May be repeated unlimited times
  • 4, 8, or 12 units
  • Music graduate students only

 

Music 299: Independent Study

Graduate Course

  • Student-devised research/composition project, with faculty guidance, resulting in a formal paper/project
  • May be taken for credit 3 times
  • 2-4 Units
  • Music graduate students only
