Women in Global Music (WIGM): Network Launch

The Department of Music is pleased to support the online launch of the Women in Global Music (WIGM) Research and Industry Network, co-founded by Dr. Joe Davies, a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Global Fellow, and Dr. Yvonne Liao, from the Oxford Research Center in Humanities. The official launch events will take place June 11-19, 2021, via Zoom, and feature wide-ranging panels and discussions led by the international team of advisors and their invited co-speakers.

WIGM seeks to pioneer women's diverse creative voices through decentered approaches and conversations traversing languages and cultures, centuries and continents, and bridging the intersecting arenas of scholarship, performance, arts administration, and social advocacy. The network is supported by an international team of advisors drawn from various cultural backgrounds, career stages, and professional affiliations. Among them is the music department's Dr. Nicole Grimes, who will lead a roundtable "Women Composers and the Undergraduate Music Curriculum" as part of the launch.

Other event topics and presentations include "Women in Music: Past, Present, and Future," "Music that Represents and Binds Us: Sarawak Indigenous Popular Music, Identity, and Sense of Belonging," "Sounding a Black Feminist Historiography," to name a few.
