Hindustani vocalist Dayita Datta and tabla artist Jyoti Prakas
Join Hindustani vocialist Dayita Datta and tabla artist Jyoti Prakas for a lecture recital of early afternoon ragas on Wed., Feb. 28 at 1 pm in MM 302.
Dayita Datta is the director of “Raga Essence” and has been performing and teaching in Southern California for the last 10 years. Dayita studied North Indian Classical music under the legendary vocalist Late Lakshmi Shankar and continues her musical journey under the guidance of renowned Hindustani vocalist Pandit Sandip Ghosh. She is the recipient of the “Music apprentice” and “Music Development” grant from Alliance for California Traditional Arts (ACTA). Dayita was recently awarded an "Individual Artist" 2016-2017 grant by Pasadena Arts & Culture Commission and the City of Pasadena Cultural Affairs Division.
Jyoti Prakas, an accomplished Tabla artist, and a prominent disciple of tabla maestro Pt. Abhijit Banerjee, resides in Southern California and teaches at “Dhwani Academy of Percussion Music” in Los Angeles, Irvine, Riverside, and San Diego area. He has accompanied various internationally acclaimed musicians such as Ustad Shahid Parvez on Sitar, Pt. Jasraj, Vidushi Purnima Chowdhury, and Viraj Amar on vocal, Pt. Keshav Ginde on flute, Pt. K.Sidhar on sarod, Pt. Tarun Bhattacharya on santoor, Kathak Dancer Pt. Chitresh Das, Tap Dancer Jason Samuel Smith, just to name a few.
