Triple Jubilee Brings Longstanding Partnership between UC Irvine Department of Music and Santa Ana High School Music Program to Downtown Santa Ana This Spring
Having developed a partnership spanning seven years, and serving hundreds of high school and college students, the team of educators behind the collaboration between the UC Irvine (UCI) Symphony Orchestra and the Santa Ana High School (SAHS) music program has decided they need to go bigger in 2020.
But what does bigger mean? SAHS musicians already work with Dr. Stephen Tucker, Director of the UCI Symphony Orchestra and Robert and Marjorie Rawlins Chair of the Music Department at UCI’s Claire Trevor School of the Arts (CTSA), at least three times per year when he comes to SAHS to work with them on their music pieces. They visit UCI twice a year for side-by-side rehearsals with the UCI Symphony Orchestra, and workshops and information sessions designed to show them what is available in a university music program. They even get one-to-one coaching in their instrument by some of UCI’s terrific undergraduate Music majors. How do you grow from here?
Dr. Tucker along with Victor de los Santos and Joseph Kaye, band and orchestra directors at SAHS, return to the question that began the partnership in 2013 – how can we serve our students? This year, the answer is to get out into the Santa Ana community, to show the value of music education, and what can happen when a youth development program uses music as the tool to catalyze students to further their education.
With full support from the City of Santa Ana, in celebration of the city’s 150th anniversary, the UCI Symphony Orchestra and the Santa Ana High School Band and Orchestra programs will perform outdoors on the 2nd Street Promenade. This Triple Jubilee brings together the three music ensembles, and the three organizations (UCI, SAHS, and the City) to honor 150 years (three “jubilees”) of culture and creativity in Santa Ana.
On Sunday, April 26, 2020 beginning at 4pm, all of the SAHS music ensembles will perform including the Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Cadet Band, Chamber Orchestra, Concert Orchestra, and Philharmonic Orchestra. The free event will culminate with the annual UCI and SAHS Symphony Orchestras combined concert where future university students from SAHS play side-by-side with UCI’s masterful musicians.
“This collaboration has never been about developing musicians, it has always been about developing young people who have been valued and encouraged in a way that they can now see themselves going to college, continuing their education and taking advantage of opportunities. Music is how we are connecting with them, but this is bigger than music,” said Tucker.
“We work tirelessly to continue serving one another. We didn’t know what this relationship would look like, seven years ago, but it is better, and deeper, and more effective than we could ever have dreamed of,” said Santos and Kaye.
