This is an example of a patch loaded in a poly~ which uses midi values to load and transpose samples of guitar strings in a groove~. This patch is used as an abstraction inside of the Sampling Synthesizer in Max patch which includes pitch bend and mod wheel functionality and contains the buffer~ objects that the groove~ in this patch refers to.
This patch demonstrates a few different ways of reading audio from buffer~.
In the groove~ object, you specify the rate of playback of a buffer~ by means of a signal in the left inlet of groove~. Normal playback speed is achieved with a signal value of 1. As shown also in the example "Play a sound file with vibrato", you can create a vibrato by modulating that signal with a low-frequency oscillator.

To avoid an initial spike on the sync output of a groove~ object, make sure that its associated buffer~ is given a nonzero size.
This example shows how to play part of a sample in Max. Simply put, to play a sound from point A to point B, nothing beats play~, you just tell it "start ". However, if you must use groove~, then you need to provide a stopping command at the right moment somehow.

The groove~ object can be used to record a loop on the fly and use the loop length to set a master tempo which can send MIDI clock messages to other machines. The groove~ object sends out its right outlet a signal that goes from 0. to 1. as the current playback location of groove~ goes from its ‘loopstart’ point to its ‘loopend’ point. By default, groove~’s ‘loopstart’ point is 0 and its ‘loopend’ point is the end of the associated buffer~.
