Percussion Audition Requirements

CLASSICAL PERCUSSION AUDITIONS

Undergraduate Freshman Applicants

Snare:

  • Pick one from Mitchell Peters' Intermediate Snare Drtum Studies #18-32
  • 30-second closed roll from pianissimo, crescendo to fortissimo, decrescendo to pianissimo

Keyboard:

  • Ab major, E major, F minor, and C# minor(all three types of minor), two octave scales with arpeggios
  • Bach, Violin Partita No. 3 in E Major, Gigue (no repeats)

Timpani:

  • Mitchell Peters, Intermediate Timpani Studies #1

 

Undergraduate Transfer Applicants

Snare:

  • Delécluse, Douze Études pour Caisse-Claire #1
  • 30-second closed roll from pianissimo, crescendo to fortissimo, decrescendo to pianissimo
  • Rimsky-Korsakov, Scheherazade, III. [D] – [H] (skip the multi-measure rests)
  • Rimsky-Korsakov, Scheherazade, IV. [P] – [R], [T] – [U]

Keyboard:

  • Major and minor scales (all three types of minor) in all keys, two octaves with arpeggios (the committee will select a few)
  • Bach, Sonata No. 1 in G Minor for Violin Solo, Presto (to first repeat only)
  • Four mallet solo best demonstrating the applicant’s musical and technical ability
  • Gershwin, Porgy and Bess, opening
  • Dukas, Sorcerer’s Apprentice, [17] – [24] (skip the multi-measure rests)

Timpani:

  • Vic Firth, The Solo Timpanist, II
  • Beethoven, Symphony No. 9, I., 19 measures after [R] – End

 

Graduate Applicants
