Global Musical Modernisms will address the growing recent interest in and scholarship about musical received as “modern” across the globe, crossing the boundaries of post/tonality and genre. We will discuss 20th and 21st century works primarily from—or influenced by—cultural areas outside of the U.S. and Central Europe, with a view towards examining how so-called music of the “peripheries” incorporates local and regional musical influences, instruments, and theoretical approaches. The music, composers and genres covered will be chosen to reflect the interests of participants, so please let me know ahead of time if you are interested in exploring a particular cultural area or musical expression.
