Music 236/148

Syllabus

MM 316 12:30 p.m. Tu/Th

This course will look closely at several non-Western musical traditions, and track their influence on works and musical movements in 20th-century concert music and beyond. We will engage in musical analysis, critical reading, and discussion of ethical and cultural issues involved in cross-cultural music, and welcome invited lecturers and performers who will bring their varied perspectives to the class.

We will look at the structure, genres and function of music in three non-Western cultures We will investigate 20th c. works inspired by these traditions: how do these works reflect their influences, and what do they say about our relationship to music of the Other Finally, we will read about and discuss some of these issues more generally, discussing hybridity and exoticism, and what constitutes true 'cosmopolitanism' in music Class presentations will be held during weeks 8 & 9; there will be no classes in week 10.

All reading and listening assignments will be posted to the website, although there may be items I need to put it on reserve at the AMC. Homework will consist of weekly assignments (a mix of analytical and written summaries of readings and reactions), a class presentation, and a brief paper (@ 2500 words). We will begin with Indonesian music, followed by a brief look at the Indian classical traditions (Hindustani and Carnatic) and some West African traditions. Class discussion and debate are crucial to the success of this class! Don't hesitate to introduce topics or traditions that haven't been presented.
