Hindustani Raag Yaman (evening raga, based on Kalyan That)

(notes by Robert Morris, Eastman)

Ascending and descending raga scale; Pakad (characteristic phrases); and Alap (sensa misura improvisation on raga with notation on voice and swaramandala (santour) plucked string instrument. A very simple and clear presentation.

More alap and taans (more elaborate phrases). If you notate these phrases in western notation and compare them, you will gain insight into the syntax of the raga.

(see also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandish)

Alap and Bandish and opening line of bandish (Sthyai) with interpolated phrases from Yaman. Has text and notations of svaras)

Try notating the bandish in Western Notation--notice differences between the voice and the svaramandala.

This presentation is more advanced (note the ornamentation). Some notations use Devagandari Script

Includes Bandish (with improvisation). This is the same composition in the previous video, but performed with rhythmic and melodic enhancements. This is in the Khyal style of performance.

Now, listen to

Rashid Khan, vocalist (with tabla and harmonium)

and

Vilayat Khan, sitar (with tabla) The main composition is a gat (an instrumental bandish with a stereotyped rhythmic structure)

There are many other performances of Yaman on the web.
