W 1-3:50 p.m., https://uci.zoom.us/j/94550253017.

This course will explore a number of operas composed in the last 30 years as they express specific issues relevant to opera in the 21st century. We begin with a survey of modernist music theater and the evolution and bifurcation of opera as a genre in the late 20th c. Subsequent classes will each focus on a specifc opera, streamed from this website or via various UCI or other streaming services, accompanied by relevant readings. Topics include opera and identity, opera and language, regieopera in the context of new offerings, opera and adaptation, the issue opera, and post-opera.

Each class one member will lead discussions on a particular opera and topic. Each member thus will take responsibility for presenting two topics/operas during the quarter.
