This is the second of the four-quarter music theory sequence required for the music major at UC-Irvine. This quarter begins with a review of 16A, linear dominants, and an introduction to Species Counterpoint. We continue with linear chords (64, dominants, and others), pre-dominant part-writing, advanced melodic figuration and rhythmic devices, secondary triad function, secondary dominants and leading-tone chords and modulation to related keys. The quarter will culminate in the performance of original compositions based on all concepts covered to date, with a focus on secondary chords and forms that incorporate a modulation to V or III.

Texts: Robert Gauldin, Harmonic Practice in Tonal Music, 2nd edition, Textbook and Workbook (W.W. Norton, 2004) [ISBN  0-393-15274-X] (Available in the UCI bookstore, and at most online merchants)

Exams: Midterm: Tuesday, February 10 (during class) Final: Thursday March 19, 8-10 am

Assignments: There will be weekly quizzes and assignments due as listed on the website. Read all assigned materials before class, do preparatory analysis, and most importantly listen to the pieces we study (I have ordered the CDs that accompany the textbook).

Class participation is of the utmost importance; we will do a great deal of the work together in class, including partial homework assignments, so always bring your workbook to class. More than 3 unexcused absences (NB: this includes labs), will affect your grade. There is a class participation grade, which includes office visits and volunteering in class.

The quarter culminates in a short composition, performed during the final week of the quarter.  Please contact Michelle, Priyanka, or myself if you have any questions; we will gladly make an appointment, or arrange for additional tutoring. There will be no late assignments unless arranged for ahead of time, and no makeup quizzes (the lowest quiz grade will be dropped). If you need special arrangements for an exam, please contact me at least three weeks ahead of time to make arrangements.

Grade breakdown:

  Theory II grade
Weekly assignments (8): 30%
Midterm Exam: 20%
Final Composition (draft and final): 15%
Quizzes and Class participation 10%
Final Exam: 25%
Total grade 100%

Emergency Preparedness: What Students Need to Know
Tips from UC Irvine Emergency Services

Call 9-1-1 immediately if you have an emergency or see something suspicious on campus.

Find campus assembly areas at:  http://www.ehs.uci.edu/em/zonemap.html

Evacuations:  Is it a drill or is it real?
In either event, here’s what you do:

  • Take every evacuation order seriously.
  • Take your personal belongings, and immediately go to the designated assembly area.
  • Remain in the assembly area until you receive further instructions.

Earthquake

  • DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON - Immediately seek shelter (under a desk or table, if possible), cover your head, and hold on to something sturdy.
  • Stay away from windows, filing cabinets, and wall-mounted cabinetry.
  • Assess your surroundings, and evacuate only if necessary or when directed to do so.

Fire

  • If you see smoke or flames inside the building, get out quickly.
  • If the fire alarm is not audible, pull the alarm as you leave the building.
  • Call 9-1-1 as soon as it is safe to do so.
  • Go to the appropriate assembly area.
  • Do not re-enter the building until emergency responders have given the go-ahead.

Violence/Active Shooter

  • CALL 9-1-1, if safe to do so.
  • RUN - Escape the building, if safe to do so.
  • HIDE - If you cannot get out of the building, hide out of view.
  • Lock/barricade the door.
  • Turn off lights.
  • Stay quiet, and silence your cell phone.
  • Stay in place until law enforcement gives the “all clear.”
  • FIGHT - If the aggressor enters the room, fight back.
