Music 16C is the third of the four-quarter music theory sequence required for the music major at UC-Irvine. This quarter begins with diatonic seventh-chord sequences, and includes an introduction to phrase structure, classical forms relevant to “common practice” Western classical music of the late 17th through early-20th century, modulations to related keys, and an introduction to chromatic harmony (modal mixture, the Neapolitan and the augmented sixth chord). The quarter will culminate in the performance of original compositions based on all concepts covered to date, including modulations to related keys and chromatic chords.

Music 16C is a co-requisite of the Music 15C Aural Skills lab directed by Dr.Eric Lindsey, which builds complementary aural and musicianship skills through sight-singing, harmonic, melodic and rhythmic dictation.
