GESTURAL

Performances

This page documents performances using the gesture characterization software for realtime improvisation devised and programmed by Christopher Dobrian.

There have been many live concert performances using the realtime Gestural improvisation software. The first two performances were on a Yamaha Disklavier grand piano, with the computer playing on the same piano as the live pianist.

Daniel Koppelman, pianist specializing in contemporary music, performed an improvisation with the software in concert on February 7, 2012. [Listen]

Jazz pianist Kei Akagi performed an improvisation with the software in concert on February 16, 2012. [Listen]

This music was also presented in a performance at the 2012 International Computer Music Conference in Lubljana, Slovenia. Because a Disklavier was not available for the ICMC performance, the piece was revised for digital piano and physical modeling synthesis of pianolike sounds. It was performed by Daniel Koppelman in concert on September 12, 2012. [Watch]

Pianist Daniel Koppelman made a studio recording of an improvisation with the Gestural software at the Music Recording Studio, Claire Trevor School of the Arts, University of California, Irvine on July 23, 2013. [Watch]

The piece was also performed by new music pianist Nicholas Vérin in concert at the Conservatoire Iannis-Xenakis in Evry, France on May 10, 2014. [Watch]
