New Music Since 1969 is a seminar—poised between structural historical and social analysis—that examines 8 trends in New Music since 1969, through the lens of specific works by influential composers in each style or direction. As a 224 the course is officially a theory seminar. Hence reading and listening assignments will be supplemented by 5 short guided analyses on a work representative of one of 5 modules we examine. There is no final paper or exam; instead, students will choose one week in which to lead the discussion on the topic of the day, and prepare a final 20-minute presentation to be delivered during finals week.
