University Orchestra

Since its inception in 1970 the UCI Symphony Orchestra has trained both students and community musicians alike. Through its performances of works from the standard classical and contemporary symphonic repertoire, its accompanying of numerous soloists, as well as its yearly operatic and musical theater productions, the orchestra has been a visible artistic presence in the Irvine community. Having had several noted musicians including Mehli Mehta, Alvaro Cossuto, Zelman Bokser, and Thomas Cockrell as conductors, the orchestra continued to develop into a highly successful university orchestra, boasting a membership of over fifty musicians. The orchestra has been led by Professor Stephen E. Tucker since 2000.

During the school year the orchestra rehearses twice weekly and presents at least five concert programs on campus. Frequent joint performances with the Choirs of the Music Department as well as collaborations with the Drama and Dance Departments serve to broaden the UCI orchestral experience. The UCI Symphony is an official performing organization of the Department of Music of the University of California, Irvine. Students may enroll in the orchestra for credit, pass/no pass, or as an extracurricular organization.

The UCI Symphony Orchestra encourages all music students to participate in its annual concerto competition, which offers the winner an opportunity to perform as a soloist with the orchestra on one of the season concerts.
