Orchestral Instruments - Undergraduate Auditions

 

 


Flute (10 minutes)

  1. Two contrasting pieces demonstrating the ability to play both slow and fast.
  2. Scales: All major and minor scales, chromatic scale (3 octaves, C' to C4)

Oboe (10 minutes)

  1. Two contrasting pieces of applicant's choice
  2. Scales: Two scales (1 major and 1 minor)

Clarinet (10 minutes)

  1. Scales: Major scales up to and including 3 sharps and 3 flats (C, G, F, D, B ,A, E ). Minor scales up to and including 2 sharps and 2 flats (a, e, d, b, g).
  2. Repertoire: Any one of the following: ( a) Brahms: First Sonata, first movement or Second Sonata, first movement; (b) Mozart: Clarinet Concerto, first movement; (c) Weber: Concertino - all.

Bassoon (10 minutes)

Entering freshman requirements:

  1. One etude and one concerto or sonata of applicant’s choice
  2. Scales: B flat major scale (2 octaves)

Transfer student requirements:

  1. Orchestral except from Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro
  2. Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony, second movement

Horn (10 minutes)

Students selects their choice of two pieces in contrasting styles.

Trumpet (10 minutes)
(Jazz trumpet – See Jazz Instrumental Program audition requirements.)

Entering freshman requirements:

  1. One work with contrasting styles or two short pieces displaying: (a) lyric, melodic playing and (b) technique
  2. Scales: Chromatic scale from low F# to high C

Transfer student requirements:

  1. Haydn, Hummel or Neruda (1 of the 3)
  2. Kent Kennan, first movement

Trombone (10 minutes)

Entering freshman requirements:

  1. Two contrasting pieces of applicant's choice.
  2. Scales: Two major scales with relative minors (2 octaves up and down); all three forms of minors.
  3. Major and minor arpeggios from those keys (2 octaves up and down)

Transfer student requirements:

  1. Two contrasting pieces of applicant’s choice
  2. Scales and arpeggios: All 12 major keys; two minor keys (two octaves up and down). All three forms of minors. All major and 2 minor key arpeggios (two octaves up and down)

Tuba (10 minutes)

  1. Solo piece of student's choice
  2. Etude of student's choice

Percussion (10 minutes)
(Jazz - See Jazz Instrumental Program audition requirements.)

Entering freshman requirements:

  1. Prepare an etude or solo of at least one page or longer on mallet percussion (marimba, xylophone, vibraphone or bells) and one of the following instruments: (a) snare, (b) tympani, (c) multiple percussion, or (d) drum set.
  2. Scales: Perform one major scale of instructor's choice
  3. Demonstrate tuning of various intervals on tympani
  4. Sight-reading

Transfer student requirements:

  1. Prepare a solo mallet percussion piece (marimba, xylophone, vibraphone, or bells)
  2. Prepare a solo snare drum etude
  3. Prepare a solo tympani etude
  4. Demonstrate major or natural, harmonic or melodic minor scales on mallet percussion instrument

Harp (12 minutes)

  1. Two contrasting pieces of applicant's choice
  2. Scales: Two scales (3 major and 3 minor)

Violin (12 minutes)

Entering freshman requirements:

  1. One movement from an unaccompanied Bach partita or sonata
  2. One other work that best demonstrates the applicant's ability
  3. Scales: Two scales with arpeggios (1 major and 1 minor in three octaves)

Transfer student requirements:

  1. One movement from an unaccompanied Bach partita or sonata
  2. One movement from a major violin concerto (composed after 1820)
  3. Scales: Two scales: arpeggios, thirds, sixths, octaves and tenths. Chromatics (1 major and 1 minor)

Viola (12 minutes)

Entering freshman requirements:

  1. One movement from an unaccompanied Bach suite
  2. One other work that best demonstrates applicant's ability
  3. Scales: Two scales with arpeggios (1 major and 1 minor)

Transfer student requirements:

  1. One etude by Kreutzer or Campagnoli
  2. Prelude to a Bach cello suite
  3. One movement of a concerto

Cello (12 minutes)

Entering freshman and transfer student requirements:

1. One movement from a Bach suite
2. One concert piece or concerto movement that best demonstrates the student’s strength
3. Scales: One major and one minor scale played slow and fast
