After attending the University of South Florida as a jazz performance major, he moved to Los Angeles in 1990, where he joined Maynard Ferguson's Big Bop Noveau Band, with whom he toured the U.S., Europe, Australia, and the Orient and recorded "These Cats Can Swing" on the Concord Jazz label.

Harnell has also toured extensively and recorded with contemporary jazz keyboardist Keiko Matsui and has performed and/or recorded with such artists as Steve Cardenas, Mitch Forman, John Beasley, Bob Sheppaard, Steve Tavaglione, Anthony Wilson, and Tony Dumas. Currently, he is the leader of his own trio featuring Larry Koonse and Joe Bagg and doing assorted gigs with players such as Jamie Rosenn, Darek Oles, Ron Stout, Matt Otto, Gilbert Castellanos and Kei Akagi.
