Choral Conducting

Must exhibit thru video tape or live audition conducting skills and a comprehension of basic musicianship skills by interview. Interview is one-half hour long and scheduled with instructor.

Composition and Technology

Portfolio of three works, preferably with both scores and recordings provided, plus an instrumental audition as specified for the performance majors (call department for details on audition).

Guitar/Lute Performance

Requires performance of two contrasting works demonstrating student's ability. Student should present an audition program which is approximately 20 minutes in length.

Instrumental Performance

Requires performance of two contrasting works demonstrating student's ability. Student should present an audition program that is approximately 20 minutes in length.

Jazz/Instrumental Composition

Portfolio of three works, preferably with both scores and recordings provided, plus an instrumental audition. Requires performing three contrasting works from jazz history (i.e. Ellington, Parker, Coltrane, Mingus, Monk, Wayne Shorter, etc.).

Piano Performance

Requires at least two contrasting pieces demonstrating student's ability. Student should present an audition program that is approximately 20 minutes in length. Instructors prefer that scores be memorized, however, it is not required.

Vocal Performance

Six contrasting songs and arias representing each of the following periods / genres:

  • Baroque Opera or Oratorio
  • Classical Opera
  • 19th century German Lied
  • 19th century French Art Song
  • 20th –21st Century American Art Song or Opera

A proficiency in pronunciation, comprehension and IPA transcription of English, Italian, German and French is expected of all entering MFA candidates. Graduate students with deficiencies in any area as determined through examination will be required to make up the deficiencies, regardless of their previous study at other institutions.
