Nohema Fernández was appointed Dean of the
Claire Trevor School of the Arts in 2003. As Dean, she has overseen
the School’s expanded capabilities in educating young artists
through both traditional and new media.

As a pianist, Fernández performs worldwide as
recitalist and symphony soloist. The Cuban-born pianist formally debuted
in Havana at age 16. She has recorded for the Musical Heritage Society,
Protone Records, MusicMasters, and Centaur Records, and is the recipient
of the NEA Solo Recitalist Fellowship for performances of Pan-American
works and the Distinction of Honor “La Rosa Blanca” (Los Angeles)
for her support of Cuban music and culture. Her articles have been published
in Piano Quarterly and Latin American Music Review, and she is the editor
of “Toward the End of the Century: Cross-Cultural and Minority Perspective,”
published by the College Music Society.
Prior to coming to UC Irvine, Fernández served
as interim head of the Department of Media Arts and Professor of Music
at the University of Arizona, Tucson. She holds degrees from Stanford
Universtiy (DMA in performance practices), Northwestern University (M.Mus.
in applied music), and DePaul University (B. Mus.).
Fernández shares her time and love of the
arts with the community by serving on the boards of directors of the Pacific
Symphony, the Orange County Philharmonic Society and the Balboa Performing
Arts Theater Foundation.
