Engineering social experiences: technology development as a tool for interdisciplinary research

In this presentation, Dr. Ian Hattwick will discuss the challenges of designing hardware systems within interdisciplinary research projects. Drawing upon his experience creating systems for professional artistic productions, he will discuss technology development as both practice-based research as well as a tool for investigating larger questions of technology, culture, and the arts.

Ian Hattwick is a composer, performer, and designer of digital musical instruments and interactive artwork. Recent work includes the VibroPixels, a wearable tactile display system used in artistic productions across Canada, Europe, and China, and the Prosthetic Instruments, a family of digital musical instruments which allow dancers to control sound in an interactive choreography-concert.
