Jen Shyu is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, dancer, and vocalist whose polymath talents are deftly synthesized in the ritualistic solo performance Zero Grasses. This new project of songs, sounds, utterances, and narratives addresses—and aims to heal—the loss of communication between humanity and nature, and the need to restore the bonds between one human being and another.

Hypen showcases new works written for The Living Earth Show (guitarist Travis Andrews and percussionist Andy Meyerson) by Iranian electroacoustic music composers of different generations: Alireza Mashayekhi, Aida Shirazi, Farnood HaghaniPour, and Nima Rowshan. The concert celebrates Mashayekhi's 80th birthday, and features the world premiere of his new work Labyrinth II.

Iridescent is a new project by Nicole Mitchell and Christina Wheeler, combining flute, mbira, electronics, and processed vocals into a luminous, shifting, living soundscape. Seeking discovery, raw emotion, and cultural expression, Iridescent builds mosaics with harmonized African rhythms, ethereal atmospheres, and freewheeling moments, defying genre in a daring musical adventure.

Lei Liang, winner of the 2020 Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition, will give a presentation in the UCI Music Department discussing his recent collaboration with a group of scientists at Calit2/Qualcomm Institute that led to a series of works inspired by Chinese landscape paintings. Hearing Landscapes was composed for 7.1 surround sound spatialization, and will be presented in surround in the ColLab. The event is free and open to all.
