Notes for the performer of Mannam

Written rhythms and ornaments may be modified slightly at the discretion of the player, in accordance with idiomatic daegeum style. Ornaments and vibrato may be added at the discretion of the player.

daegeum solo, duration 30 seconds; computer begins to add a little reverb

Page 1 measures 6-9
each measure lasts the duration of one comfortable breath, total duration about 40 seconds; computer quietly doubles the pitch an octave lower

Play as written; computer adds pre-recorded daegeum phrases to make a duo (and later a trio) with the player

Begin when computer's reversed gong sound becomes audible; each phrase (between double bar lines) should have the duration of one comfortable breath or less; phrases may be performed in ANY order desired by the player, as deemed appropriate to interact with the computer sounds; computer continues to play "duo" recorded daegeum phrases, and also plays synthesizer chords to harmonize with the player, later adds maemi sounds, and then echos

When computer begins to play changgo rhythm, the player should continue choosing phrases from page 3 (may repeat phrases), but should increase the tempo of his phrases and play in accordance with the 12/8 meter suggested by the changgo rhythm; computer continues changgo, synthesizer, maemis, and some pitch shifting of the daegeum sound; when echos begin and the changgo stops playing, proceed to page 4
