How to Apply – Undergraduate Program and Graduate Program

The Department of Music admits new undergraduate students (including transfer students) in the Fall Quarter only.

Freshman applicants may only apply for admission for the B.A. in Music program; admission to the B.Mus.-Performance program is available only to currently enrolled students who are selected on the basis of the B.Mus. audition, which is typically scheduled during the student's second year. Transfer applicants may apply for admission to either the B.A. in Music or the B.Mus.-Performance program.

You must first apply to the University, using the online version of the UC Application for Admission. The application filing period for admission in the following Fall Quarter runs from November 1 through November 30.

In addition to meeting all eligibility requirements for admisssion to the University of California, prospective students who wish to major in Music must also pass an entrance audition. Only those students selected from a prescreening process will be invited for a campus audition. Auditions for admission in Fall 2010 admissions will be held on January 30, February 6, and February 13. The Department of Music will determine the date and time of your audition and will communicate this information to you by email.

All students who are offered admission as Music majors are considered, as appropriate, for one of the Department’s limited number of undergraduate scholarships. There is no separate application to be submitted and no need for applicants to take any special measures to ensure consideration for a scholarship.

If you have any questions about the application process, contact Sally Avila, in the Department Office. If you have any questions about undergraduate curricular matters, contact our Undergraduate Director, John Schneiderman.
