Annual Concerto Competition

The

UCI Concerto Competition

will be held on February 19, 2012 in Winifred Smith Concert Hall, in the Claire Trevor School of the Arts.

General Rules and Procedures

Eligibility: Competitors must be full-time students at UCI. The previous year's winners are ineligible. To assure the appropriateness and preparedness of the entry, the signature of the competitor's studio instructor in required on the application.

Repertoire: The work selected must be at least twelve minutes in length and be performed in the original key and language. Participants MUST perform the entire work from memory.

Acompaniment: The student will provide his or her own accompanist.

Judges: The department will select a panel of faculty or guest musicians to judge the competition. Faculty members who have students entered in the competition will not be chosen as judges.

Application: Applications will be available in the Music Department Office. They must be completed and returned to the Music office by Friday, February 10, 2012 by 5:00 p.m. A schedule of assigned competition times will be posted.

The competition: One copy of the score or piano reduction must be provided to the judges. Competitors must be prepared to perform the entire work, from which the jury may ask selections. The jury may stop the competitor at any time. Competitors will be judged on the basis of musicianship, thorough knowledge of the composition, technical proficiency, expressivity and stage deportment. Winners must be deemed ready and able to perform with the orchestra with limited rehearsal time.
