UCI Dance Visions 2009
This year's annual concert featuring faculty choreographers is dedicated to Claire Trevor Professor, Donald McKayle, celebrating his 20 years in the Dance Department.  McKayle premieres a new work to an original score jointly composed by Kei Akagi and Alan Terricciano and performed by Kei Akagi & The Tokyo Trio and the UCI Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Stephen Tucker.  Yvonne Rainer, an avant-garde choreographer and filmmaker, presents a restaging of her signature work.  "The Mind is a Muscle, Part 1, or Trio A."  Jodie Gates presents an excerpted version of choreographer William Forsythe’s neo-classical masterpiece, "Artifact Suite," with 25 dancers

Reinventing Tradition: Violin and Computer Plays the East and Beyond

Japanese violinist-composer Mari Kimura, violin and computer, presents a diverse program of violin and electronics, featuring works that are written for her and by her. Kimura uses interactive computer, combining the sounds from the East, such as Japanese shamisen and Balinese gamelan, reinventing the vocabulary and the music language of her instrument

On Wednesday, March 11, 2009, there will be a special concert given by the London Music Club Piano Quartet with Haroutune Bedelian (violin), Russell Guyver (viola), David Chew (cello) and Lorna Griffitt (piano). Formed 30 years ago in London, England with pianist Gerald Robbins, the quartet is named after the legendary establishment which housed major international musicians residing in England, where many members of the group also lived. In recent years, this ensemble has performed with various artists, regularly appearing in the Rio International Cello Encounter which takes place in the summers in Brazil directed by the British cellist, David Chew.
