This course surveys the current field of music theory, which has grown by leaps and bounds over the past 10 years, far transcending its beginnings in formalist analytic methodologies for the description/prescription of musical works. The core concerns of contemporary Anglo-American and Continental theory occupy the first four weeks of the course. Five weeks will be devoted to contemporary areas of growth within music theory that I hope will be of interest to the student body.
