This is the second of the four-quarter music theory sequence required for the music major at UC-Irvine. This quarter begins with a review of 16A and introduction to phrase-structural principles relevant to “common practice” Western classical music of the late 17th through early-20th century. We continue with linear chords (64, dominants, and others), pre-dominant part-writing, advanced melodic figuration and rhythmic devices, secondary triad function, secondary dominants and leading-tone chords and modulation to related keys. The quarter will culminate in the performance of original compositions based on all concepts covered to date, with a focus on secondary chords and forms that incorporate a modulation to V or III.
