This course will look closely at the classical traditions of Indonesia and India. Our excursion into Indonesian music will focus on the gamelan traditions of Java and Bali, while are brief look at the Indian Classical tradition will introduce the basics of both Carnatic and Hindustani (South and North) traditions. Our texts will include historical and cultural introductions to each tradition, but we will also look at musical structure and form in at least two works from each tradition. Invited lecturers and performers will introduce us to several of these thriving traditions.
